may 11 blog

Daily blog  5/11
Today in class we worked in our groups or independently depending on your project preference and looked at different writing techniques. Mr. Rivers opened up class describing three different writing techniques including metaphors such as the yurts, the golf course and a gardener/architect.  One example is George saunders, an American writer of short stories, essays, novellas, children's books, and novels. He used the yurt and mansion metaphor as a guide for his work. The idea is to take little pieces(yurt) of work together to make a whole(mansion). The next example was with Jonathan franzen, an American novelist and essayist who made the metaphor with the golf course. In golf, you are always evaluating, strategizing and thinking about your next moves and the steps to get there.  Getting to the last hole of the flag is the objective of the game and finishing with a good score is the goal. Writing applies to this because you are setting a goal throughout your writing or film and trying all techniques to achieve it. You always have to evaluate and re-evaluate your steps on your way to complete this goal. The last example is with George RR martin, an American novelist and short-story writer, screenwriter, and television producer. IN this metaphor, he uses the gardener and architect. Being the “architect”, you can plan everything out and always revis, or you can be a “gardener” and let the story flow by not planning and constantly revise your work as you go.

The rest of class we continued to consult with Mr. Rivers about our objectives using a verb, thing and tactic. One of my best objectives is, to create a news broadcasting tone by using formal dialogue in a interview. I will achieve this by making sure my tone is serious, yet casual and stay true to the correct tone for my audience in my screenplay. I could relate what we learned today to the real world because we are working on time management for our projects. I have to learn how to properly separate my work and not wait until the last minute to do this project especially because we have such a long time-frame to finish it.
