Today in class we discussed allusions and how it relates to the book we are currently reading, Ready Player One. Allusions is when the author, in this case Ernest Cline, makes a reference to something without. This reference could be something in literature, history, or it could also be some sort of film. What allusions can make reference to is not limited to that list but those seem to be the main ones, especially in Ready Player One. We split up into our table groups with the task of trying to find as many Allusions as possible through out the first seven chapters. My group found that the main character of the book is fascinated by the culture of the long gone 1980s. Through out the first seven chapters the author references the 80s for that exact reason, he mentions anything from Star Wars to loving to listen to Bon Jovi. The main character actually believes that he understands the 1980s and the culture around it better than he understands his own actual reality. Also, in class, we watched the alternate ending to the movie we just finished watching Get Out. This ending consisted of the lights flashing being real cops instead of the main character's best friend who just happens to be driving his TSA Vehicle. The main character, Chris, than ends up in what seems to be prison, and has to take the blame for the murder of three white people even though it was in self defense. Although I am not sure he is taking the blame, the tone at the end when Chris and his best friend have a last conversation really gives off the feeling that that's what is going down. This is where class left off but for tomorrow we are supposed to have notes from Get Out to help start our discussion tomorrow.
