11/6/17

Today, Rivers begun with explaining that Be Reel blog posts are due tomorrow and explaining how they should be written with both the objective and subjective components in mind. He then informs us that we will begin with finding allusions in Ready Player One, and then move onto watching the alternative ending of Get Out. As a class we then discovered many different allusions. (My group found 25!) Then, Rivers asked us to find allusions that expand on the setting and characterization of Wade Watts. Some explained the fictional world of the OASIS and others explained the setting of the real world. Some explained why Wade likes the 80s so much. We then discussed the difference between perfectionists and people who are obsessive. We then moved onto the alternative ending of Get Out. Instead of a Rod showing up to help Chris, two police showed up instead and arrested him. It then cuts to Chris in jail and Rod talking to him. Rod wants Chris to give names so he can help him get out of jail. Chris tells Rod he’s content with being in jail because he stopped Coagula, and then it ends with Chris going back to his cell.

The 80s are making a huge comeback lately. Everyone is obsessed with a time they’re not from. This is present in lots of ways, 80s style 8-bit games, “futuristic” 80s synth pop, 80s fashion, etc. This book from the future, focused on the past, conveniently fits in with society right now. This culture is making a huge comeback right now and that may be why this book is so popular right now.
