The Grand Tour - Liam Cooke

The Grand Tour is a review style show only on Amazon Prime where three Co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May review and test luxury, super, sports, and budget cars. This branched off from another TV show called Top Gear on BBC which is very similar to this. The crew branched off after Jeremy Clarkson’s contract was not renewed. As the three consider themselves as a package they went from Top Gear to the Grand Tour. The show kept the same amount of quality and in fact has a bigger budget and longer episodes than Top Gear. However the show is lacking in some of the features, for instance Top Gear had a celebrity on every season due to the shows popularity. In The Grand Tour they tease that the celebrities are going to be on the show but every episode they kill them off in the background as a skit and never actually get them to talk on the show. With this happening every episode the question of how scripted the show comes in. The entertainment value is slightly decreased due to how scripted the show is, and how it seems fake in some parts.

Even with the increase in scripted ness the show contains a large amount of entertainment. As Top Gear did, the Grand Tour also features a special in the middle of a season. Theses special episodes give viewers an enlarged stretch off nonstop screen time of the crew navigating through whatever obstacles is thrown at them. For me these episodes are especially good often times taking up two fifty minute episodes. The show is still great and has a bright future without being held down by BBC rules and budgets that had limited them in the past. Even with the decrease in improvising the core of the show is perfect, three best friend driving cars worth millions of dollars while having a good time. Being a fan of the show for multiple seasons i’m glad to see that the show is still kicking and is getting better even after leaving their station.
