Be Reel: The Arrival

I recently watched a somewhat new movie called The Arrival. Just from the trailer, I had a feeling that I wouldn’t enjoy this movie, and I was right. However; my friends made me watch it because I was outnumbered. My friends couldn’t stop raving about the movie, but I found all parts of the movie bad, subjectively. Objectively, however, I found this movie to be pretty well-made. Subjectively, I didn’t find one part of this movie that I enjoyed. This movie is a Sci-fi, which is probably the least interesting movie genre to me. I also thought that there was a lot of build up that ultimately led to nothing and left the climax pretty insignificant. This aspect really just made the movie drag on and had me constantly looking at the clock. In the beginning, I had some hope that that the storyline would pick up and become more intriguing, but it never got there for me. I found that when the movie actually got to the “climax”, it didn’t really go anywhere and never got to a fulfilling conclusion. The main reason, however, that i found this movie bad was that it was science-fiction which I really find no interest in.
Aside from all my subjective critiques on the movie, I find this movie to be well made when looking through an objective point of view. It really comes down to the choices made by the director to effectively make this film pleasing to view and watch, which I think he did quite well. It partially made up for the uninteresting plot. For example, the view out onto the lake from the main characters window was so sleek and pleasing to look at, it was almost like you were actually in the home looking out the window. Speaking of sleak, the spacecrafts and the surrounding environment are extremely smooth and realistic. The mise-en-scene factors are what help to effectively create these images. Everything from the lighting, shot angles, audio, composition, and depth of field. Also, the clarity seen throughout the film aids in the amiable effect given off by this movie. So for all the reasons stated above, I would give this movie a good (objective) - bad (subjective) rating.

  1. It sounds like we both may have some bias towards the subjective value of this movie, but in the complete opposite ways. While you don’t really like Science fiction in the first place I revel in it. Personally, I like to hear all the little details of how to coming to understand a fictional creature and situation using real life science, but I could definitely understand it being a drag for a lot of people. For me, the buildup and climax was effective, because I was intrigued throughout the entire movie as the plot advanced and the characters developed only for the world to be turned upside down part way through, but it has actually been a while since I’ve seen it so I might be remembering only the good parts and skimming over the boring. It feels like the enjoyment of a movie can sometimes really just be based on a person’s personal preference for a certain genre and it’s just an unfortunate coincidence this one wasn’t your cup of tea.
