Shameless is a very popular TV series that actually just released a new season November 5th. Although it is one of my favorite shows of all time, I tried to be more analytical of the show. After analyzing it a little bit more, I decided to rate this show bad good. Although the show is entertaining, objectively, the show is a cluster you-know-what. There are so many things going on in the show at once that sometimes it's hard to keep up. Warning: there may be spoilers in the rest of this blog.
Objectively, the show is a little bit of a mess. The main idea here is that there is a family that is completely screwed up, which makes it pretty relatable. Most families a screwed in some way. Anyway, the main characters each have their own little story in a way. The show switches around between each of the siblings and the parent, or sometimes, parents. One of the parents, Monica, is mostly absent. However, she shows up sometimes to cause some chaos. Frank, the father, is also absent for the most part because he's an alcoholic. So, the oldest daughter, Fiona, has to take care of all of her siblings. Overall, the storyline is good. However, there is nothing to take away from the show itself. It is purely entertainment, it was not made with lessons to be taught or things to take away in mind.
Subjectively, the show is fantastic. The chaos is entertaining, and in some ways relatable which makes the show more enjoyable. Although there is nothing to take away from the show, it is completely addictive. The story line grabs the audience and keeps them watching. For example, the 15 year old kid, Debbie, gets pregnant in season 6. That surprised the audience and left them wanting more, which was a great move by the screenwriters. There are plenty of these little surprises throughout the entire show. It won't leave you bored for a second.
Overall, Shameless is a great show entertainment and enjoyment wise. However, when analyzing it deeper, I realized that it isn't too great objectively. That doesn't make the show itself bad, because it is literally my favorite show at the moment. It just isn't objectively strong. Don't read this and think you shouldn't watch the show because I rated it bad good. It is still an entertaining show that is worth your time!
I completely agree with this rating of Shameless as a bad good show. The fact that objectively the show is a mess and there is just so much going on is a very good point. There are so many main characters that each have so much going on that it is hard to keep track of what is happening sometimes. The storyline is definitely strong and there are never ending problems for these characters, which makes the show pure entertainment. There are many surprises that come with the show and the writers even do a good job with make it funny sometimes, that being said people aren’t really ever pulling out useful information from this show. The show does do a good job with holding the viewer’s attention with all the chaos and, I think that because there is so much going on viewers try even harder to pay attention therefor not losing focus or interest.
