Daily Blog, 11-07-17 : Mallory Collins

In class we were asked the question, If Get Out is in conversation with academic voices then what would it say to Dr. Robin Means Coleman? (i.e How does the film engage academia).Comparing a article that Dr. Robin wrote regarding Jurassic World and the portrayal of black men as monsters and Jordan Peele´s Get Out, my group and I begun to answer the question. After a long discussion we came up with the claims that Jordan Peeles Get Out goes against Dr. Coleman´s idea of a black character needing to be killed in the beginning of a horror film. So with Peele ignoring that idea, and having the black character be the protagonist he flips the social hierarchy and makes white people the monster of the film . After figuring out our group claim, each table posted their ideas on google classroom. Reading them aloud, we continued to discuss the different academic voices in Get Out and Dr.Robin´s article. After more discussions between the class, we then watched the alternative ending for Get Out again. Sadly we did not get to further talk about the ending for Get Out, for the bell rung right at the end of the film clip.
