Be Reel: Scandal

Throughout the end of the summer and into the school year I began watching the TV series Scandal. It is a thriller about the dirty behind the scenes of political figures and system of Washington D.C. What is interesting about the Scandal episodes is that they are always leaving you with something and wanting more. The genre of this series is "thriller" which means that the whole purpose of this series is to create an exciting plot, by including (typically) crime and/or espionage. Shonda Rhimes, the creator of this series does this by using a low lighting key in a majority of the scenes. This creates mystery, and suspense by having the audience not be able to see everything, giving them a sense of thrill. Diegetic audio is also a contributor to creating thrill because there is a lot of yelling in the intense parts of the episodes This is to grab the audience's attention and define the tone of what is happening. To complete the "thriller" genre, the addition of crime and espionage is what creates each episode.
Personally, I think that this is one of the greatest shows that I have seen in a long time. I was hesitant on trying it because all I saw in it was politics, and I am not really into that, but that is just one of the many themes that are in this show there is mystery, love, drama, etc. that can all somehow tie this together. What Rhimes also does a really good job with is keeping the viewers interested. There are many different characters, but not so many where you lose track, whose live/problems you look into throughout one episode. Also, the ending to almost every episode is a cliffhanger, and that makes it impossible to stop watching (especially on Netflix).  I love everything about this show and will recommend it to anyone.

  1. I agree that this show is defiantly a great sample of cliff hangers. The way the directors design the episodes to cut right at the climax and the next episode usually leads into the next in some way. I like how they buildup the plot and use a lot of twists as well. Liv hand picked each of her employees in OPA, Olivia Pope and Associates, to be her ¨Gladiators in Suits¨ as Harrison would call them and each of them have their own backstory, dirty secrets and emotional baggage. Olivia uses her “white hat” to symbolize being good and doing good deeds and **SPOILER** I really like how in Season 6 when Olivia eventually trades in her white hat for the white house again she still makes it clear that she will still fight for the truth and what is right ad won succumb to the bad things and lies that go on in the White House. I also really like this show because it makes you wonder if anything from this is real in some way. If any of this blackmail and secrets happen in the White House in real life. I would defiantly agree with you in recommending this show!!
