Daily Log Blog: 11/7/17

Today in class we took the idea of taking two mediums and seeing what happens across them. We started the lesson off with the topic of academia. The definition of academia is how a person is avidly pursing research, education, and scholarship. We then looked at a  passage from a PhD professional on racial studies, Dr. Robin Coleman. After reading the passage about the opening scene from Jurassic park the class started to think about what happens across the mediums of this passage and the movie Get Out by Jordan Peele. Mr Rivers then asked us this very essential question of, If Get out is in Conservation with academia, then what would the film say to Dr. Coleman? In other words, how does the film engage in conversation with academia? After the question was asked we came together as a group to talk about the question. We came up with the points of Get Out makes a point of beating the white man and so does Coleman. And that the white man must make the black man feel lesser so he can feel powerful. After discussing this with the class we turned and decided to focus more on the topics found in the passage that was provided with us by Dr. Coleman. Some examples the class came up with is the white man takes down the "monster", racial/ intellectual superiority, giving the  and monster ethos=killing a black person. We then shifted to the idea of synthesizing the movie and the passage. Some examples were, intellectually superior goes with the mother from get out using hypnosis, the big black man with a big black gun is not seen in the movie, but is seen as slight, nicer clothing, handsome, casual (lost/scared), and that Jordan Peele is not saying you’re wrong Coleman, but it doesn't have to be that way anymore. We also made claims as groups about synthesizing the movie and passage and those claims can be found on classroom. But I thought there was one great example that really showed the comparison and synthesis between the passage and the movie and that was, Get Out fights the notation that the white man has to defeat the monster by him being the monster. It really shows how the idea of Jordan Peele's directing choice of changing the direction of typical horror films. He really wants to show people that things can be different and don't have to follow the same examples. The overall objective of this class can be seen and applied in the real world. Looking at two different types of mediums and synthesizing them is used in everyday life. Taking topics in the real world and comparing them is a very important skill used in everyday life. Its seen in politics, news, weather, sports, science etc. This synthesis skill allows for knowledge and creative problem solving, creating opinions and solutions.
