11/7/17
Today in class we started of by going into individual work with the task of creating a claim that synthesizes the movie we recently watched in class, Get Out, and a quote by Dr. Robin Means Coleman. In her quote, Dr. Robin Means Coleman discusses why the black man in horror movies always dies first. She believes that this is because if the big bad monster kills the big bad black man with a gun, it will show how mean and evil the monster is. This is all in reference to the opening scene of the popular Jurassic Park movie series. This is in connection to Get Out because in the horror movie it shows the main character, Chris, get basically kid napped by, who we find out later in the movie is his girlfriend's younger brother, Jermey. Also Dr. Robin Means Coleman claims that she believed horror film directors also set out with goal to not only make the white man more intellectually superior but also become the hero of the movie by the end. This, however, is the opposite of what is portrayed in Get Out because at the end of the movie the Chris is able to out smart his girl friends family and end up killing them all (in self defense). While making our claims to synthesize the two texts, Get Out and the quote by Dr. Robin Means Coleman, it is made clear that the claims that we present is specific to one part from each of the two texts. Similarities between the two texts include: the monster in the horror film killing black people, racial superiority. Also at the end of class we found a connection between the movie Get Out and a movie we watched previously in the year, No Country for Old Men. This is in Get Out Jeremy, Chris's girlfriend's brother, also plays a younger character in No Country for Old Men.
