Colaco Bee Reel

Pencil Pusher Origins : Lawyers Guns and Money

The Movie Pencil Pusher Origins: Lawyers Guns and Money, was brought to us by a segment of the Ohana family and produced and edited by Thomas Blake, Massive Tuff Guy Colaco, and Liem. The original idea for the production was a mockumentary style comedy based upon the life of fictional character and super dope guy David Applebaum ( Played by Kyle Meyers( Play By Pappa Colaco)) as he endeavours to avenge the death of his friend Ibraham by consolidating the local illicit pencil dealing scene. Ibrahams death was brought about by local pencil kingpin Izzat ( Play by LGM) who intentionally or unintentionally ( who knows really) gave him synthetic pencils which caused a massive aneurysm. Following the death of his best friend David is portrayed to be a lost cause, blindly wandering around town and attempting to buy a snickers with two cents. Following his attempt to lowball CVS on a snickers David is confronted face to face where he begins his journey to become the new top dawg in the pencil world.

The movie was filmed around our very own Sparta New Jersey where the pencil epidemic has taken its toll on the local school system. The original concept for the film was to include a series of interviews with the main character David Applebaum about the transition from local nobody to top dawg. The interviews were meant to show the differences in his character from the beginning of his journey, set a year in the past, to his current character set in the present day. The execution of the film however did not follow the original script too well. The final cut of the film didn't do too well to establish an actual understandable plot, it kinda just a mashup of loosely connected scenes that vaguely went together in someway to create an incomprehensible plot. The beginning scene with David sitting down and being asked questions by the interviewer was intended to be a larger part of the film to show the development of David's character and give the audience a personal insight into the life and transition of his character. But in final cut the only interviews that made it were the beginning scene where the interviewer repeats his name and his is too zoned out to realize, that and the final scene ( shot on prom) of David giving his take on how people can or cannot exit the game. With that final scene it was intended to cut to black on the snap of his fingers in a mock Sopranos type way, but due to budget cuts and lazy editing the film ends glaring at his handsome face, which is just as good in some ways. Another challenge faced by the production team was editing out the splurge of profanity streaming out of Izzat during his confrontation with David. Rather than adding a bleep track equal in length to the scene it was in turn decided to cut all audio from that scene and dub the interaction with sub titles which served to create a comedic aspect to what was intended to be a serious moment in the story of David. The dubs also served to entirely change the narrative of what Izzat and David were yelling at each other again lessening the mock seriousness of the scene and the film as a whole.

Some things that the Production wing of Ohana did accomplish well were the intro scene of David just driving around town with cuts of different parts of the drive added a mellow ominousness to the movie as well as the fantastic music produced by Thomas. The long take in CVS following david on his journey of finding the ideal Snickers was a fan favourite for obvious reasons. What the team should have done is put more time into actual filming the movie, there were some great ideas to make a very in depth plot with a full mourning scene at a hospital following the death of Ibraham, longer interviews spliced throughout the film to give a first person explanation of what was going on, and an actual police search of david's car which only didnt come to light because no one wanted to call the cops on me. Detective Hasslocc was also intended to make an appearance but he was busy doing narc stuff.

Over all A+

Thanks for watching.

Your Welcome.
