Daily Log Blog - 6/16/18 - Ben Schultz

Today in class we finished up the films that our class created. We watched Kirk's film, money equals power. Money Equals Power was a sport's movie that involved a team winning the big game after paying off players and/or referees. This is an important topic to cover, considering recent cheating in sports events, like "Deflate-gate." Cheating is relatively common in the sports world. Many athletes will take steroids to improve their athletic skills. You would think that someone who likes sports enough to play them at a professional level would want to do everything they can to improve the integrity of the sport, rather than ruining it for everyone else. Why would they even worry so much about winning the game, considering first of all, it is just a game, and second of all, whether they win or lose they are still going to make massive amounts of money? As someone who is barely interested in sports, maybe I am not qualified to talk about integrity and honesty in the sporting world, but it just seems counter-intuitive to me to cheat in something so inconsequential. We also began reviewing other classes' films and screenplays. I read Tyler Holden's The Fallen table - one of the few fantasy/science-fiction options. I expected more people who were writing scripts to go the science-fiction/fantasy route, but the majority of students seemed to pick other genres. I am generally more attracted to Science Fiction or Fantasy, rather than comedy or drama. I'll admit that there are a lot of great dramas out there, but I have never been a big fan of comedies. Comedy in movies often seems to be raunchy, or gross-out comedy more than anything. There are a few comedy films that I really enjoy, like Monty Python stuff and some Wes Anderson movies, but the majority of the time I won't go out of my way to see a comedy movie. On the other hand, I think that there is a lot of really good comedy TV. Stuff like The Office, Parks and Rec, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Arrested Development is really enjoyable.
