The Best of the Best: You Choose Which Team Should Come Out on Top

What if I told you that two of the greatest football teams in the history of Sparta High School never had the chance to win a division championship ring?  Statistically speaking, the 2016 and 2017 football seasons were the best seasons Sparta football has ever seen, both of which ended in heartbreak and defeat. This documentary will explain the season highlights, share player insight through interviews including favorite memories and they will be candid about which team should be labeled “the best of the best.”

The 2016 season boasted of a very explosive offensive team, averaging 43.9 points per game and the ability to score almost at will. With Quarterback Matt Maute at the helm, Running Back Alex Milliken in the back field, and a mighty offensive line to complement, there was no stopping the offense. The defense, likewise, was fast and physical.  They had the ability to shut down teams early in the game leaving them scrambling for ideas. After an undefeated 10-0 start and a number one seed in the playoffs, the 2016 Sparta Spartans suffered a devastating loss to old Tappan in the semi-finals with a final score of 30-34. A loss that the underclassmen pledged would never happen again.

As preparations began the following season, the 2017 Spartans were fueled by revenge. With a new backfield, the offense was ready to get going again.  Building on the previous year’s strengths, the team returned seven defensive starters that included four of the six front line players. With a more balanced offense and defense, the 2017 Sparta Spartans averaged 33 points per game and held steady with the power in their defense.  With sights set on advancing to the championship game at Met-Life Stadium, all hope was lost after falling to Ramapo in the semi-final game with a final score of 21-14.

This film will provide details of the game plan to seek revenge for the prior year by providing comparison statistics and the opinions of players who help to execute the plan.  Once and for all, the stats and opinions will duke it out to really determine which team will come out on top. Players that were interviewed are 2017 Quarterback Anthony Broccoletti, 2016 - 2017 Running Back Thomas Agudo, 2016 - 2017 Wide Receiver Eric Castorina, 2016 - 2017 Defensive End Ben Davis and more. There can only be one true “All time best football team of Sparta” and you, the audience, will decide who deserves the title.
