White Chicks is a early 2000s comedy about two FBI agents and brothers Marcus and Kevin Copeland who are on their final straw before being fired from the FBI and are assigned to drive the Wilson daughters and heiresses to a billion-dollar fortune, Brittany and Tiffany, to the Hamptons to avoid the sisters from getting kidnapped. While driving, they all get into a car accident and the sisters each get a small cut on their faces, refusing to show themselves at Labor Day in Hamptons party. Since the sisters won't go, Marcus and Kevin disguise themselves as the sisters for the whole weekend in effort to keep their jobs and arrest the kidnapper. The film lacks in important mise-en-scene for the most part, but the costumes for most of the characters suggest that they have alot of money, the setting reveals the same. Instead of focusing on mise-en-scene. the movie focused more on delivering the lines and doing certain actions in a way that would make a joke as funny as it could be. The film has many callbacks to previous points in the movie and has multiple plot lines going on at once, like the main plot of catching the kidnapper, the Marcus and Gina plot, and the Wilson sisters and Vandergeld sisters plot.
Subjectively I really enjoyed this film. Although the quality of the movie wasn't the best, the movie never had a dull moment for me. I found myself laughing throughout most of the movie and I thought most of the jokes were pulled off very well. The Copeland brothers were very likable and funny in and out of their disguises and made the movie enjoyable to watch. I also liked the addition of Latrell Spencer, played by Terry Crews, as he not only gave the movie energy from his non-stop antics but he was a very funny and likable character as well. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie even if it wasn't made very well and it's one of my favorites.
I just recently re-watched this movie as well, and I would have to say I agree with your rating. The movie is absolutely hilarious and very entertaining and is one of my favorites to watch with my cousins when they come over for the holidays. However, like you said, it was not exactly well made. Watching it from an analytical standpoint, the movie makes zero sense. Two black men completely pretend to be a different race and gender, which is near impossible but yet very funny. Plus, somehow, no one notices! These two men look like literal aliens, yet no one notices they are not who they say they are. This is part of the subjective enjoyment. However, objectively, it makes no sense. As for character development and plot, there was very little of both. The plot did not exactly have an end point, or a beginning. It is barely there. As for character development, the only development there is the fact that they “become” women. Although the movie was not well made, I also subjectively really enjoyed this movie. It is absolutely hilarious to watch them sometimes break character and talk like a man, or pretend to act like a woman and fail miserably with crazy high heals on. The fact that not one person notices that these two “women” are actually men ties the whole plot together. Overall a agree with Ethan about his rating but i feel like I personally enjoyed the movie a little more so would give it more generous ratings.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with your rating of this movie Ethan. White Chicks is a hilarious movie that I myself enjoyed very much. The movie was full of comedy and silly skits that I enjoyed but was also very poorly made and the story was not logical. The actors played their roles very well but it did not help that the story was about two black guys who dress up as white chicks. Their fake high pitch voices and silly get ups made it all the more hilarious and like you said them constantly breaking character was hilarious. Despite this the movie was still made poorly and is only deserving of a bad good rating.
