Be Reel - IT

I recently watched the movie IT directed by Andrés Muschietti, and had mixed feelings about its objective qualities, as well as my overall enjoyment of the film. The film starts out good with an opening scene of a boy named Georgie playing in the rain with the boat his brother found him. It then leads him to a sewer where his boat falls and he encounters Pennywise at this sewer. Pennywise eventually baits him into leaning for his boat, and in turn bites his arm off and drags him into the sewer(clip below).

This immediately hooked me into the movie and I was looking forward to the rest but it progressively got worse and worse. The plot was very cliche, including your typical bullies with greased back hair and the fat kid getting bullied, made up for a very boring side story. The main story leading them to the typical abandoned house where they would fight the monster and free all the children Pennywise has captured was very expected and cliche as I said before. While the scene had some good objective qualities, such as using unique horrors and fears for the children to create scary and suspenseful experiences for the audience, it was not enough to carry the movie to make it enjoyable to watch. Additionally, the ending of the movie attempts to set up a series however it almost feels as if it answers any questions the audience should have after watching. While it is unsure if the clown is dead or not, the director immediately tells us that these kids will come back if things get rocky again, and all the children pennywise corrupted are saved. Importantly, the town doesn’t seem to care for the murder of its many people and it's very questionable considering they lost children, adults, and important police officers. Overall, this movie was not very enjoyable to watch, and objectively, the director made poor choices in terms of plot development, going with the cliche story line for a horror movie, as well as using a very dry location with little excitement and scares in the movie.

  1. Lots of good details about the events in the film and the choices that directors made in the development of It. Consider how you could have used your paragraph breaks to more specifically differentiate between the subjective and objective components of this post. Remember that we should get a sense of where this falls on that Be Reel scale. Could have gone more in depth with the subjective. It’s weird, because so much of high school writing is about finding objectivity, but this is an opportunity where we can/should focus on YOU. Especially in terms of expectations and the experience itself, use that analysis as an opportunity to analyze your own sense of taste/preference.

  2. I enjoy your brief summary at the beginning of the blog. Its very short and to the point. I unfortunately would have to disagree with your feelings about the objective qualities. Where you say the movie got worse and worse, I personally think the movie progressed to something better. While the story might be cliche, I still think it manages to produce a great product. I think IT took a typical horror plot and was able to turn into a piece of art. Everything from the camera angles to the lighting made an eerie shadow over the movie and created the build up of suspense. Overall I have the opposite opinion on the movie, but I do see where your opinion comes from and respect it.
