1/18/18 Daily Blog

Today in class the students primarily spent the duration of class putting the finishing touches on their literary reviews. However Mr. Rivers spent 15 minutes discussing an important aspect to the evolution of our writing as students. He referenced George Saunders, the author of the Bob story we previously looked at this school year. We then learned that Saunders had recently written his first ever novel and how it frightened him extensively. Saunders described his transition from creating Yurts, an image of one being displayed on the board during the discussion, to creating a mansion. Mr. Rivers then followed by encouraging the students to look  to the "yurts" they had created while writing their literary reviews. On a separate note, Mr. Rivers made his displeasure with the students lack of care for completing their blogs. The Be Reel blogs represent a tenth of the overall marking period grade and failure to complete one or both can be detrimental to one's grade. Mr. Rivers urged the students to not only stay on top of the blogs they had left this marking period but also be proactive with the Be Reel blogs to come. Today's lesson overall related to the larger picture for life and not just about English class. Lessons such as looking towards smaller successes when pursuing a larger goal can be very useful later in life when many of us pursue a career path of our own choosing. Additionally, we had yet another discussion on the perils of procrastination and overall indifference to efficiently completing assignments. There are no extensions or overall leniency in the adult world when it comes to late work or deadlines. Mr. Rivers especially made this a point in his discussion today calling for all his students to end this bad habit and become responsible when it comes to their assignments.
