Hello classmates, we began class today discussing the karate film and how the Thematic, narrative, and practical pieces of the film were shown. The objective of the class is IWBAT analyze how choices in cuts and assembly contribute to the narrative, thematic and practical development of film. Be able to draft strong claims that synthesize text and choices. We start class with conversation from the scene of "The Protector" from yesterday. We begin to analyze the Cause and effect of editing choices.
Editing Choices-cuts,transitions,assembly ----------> Narrative, Thematic, Practical. Some examples regarding the scene from the Protector were...

  • The wide angle of the scene causes a practical effect to see more action
  • One continuous shot causes a practical immersion.
  • The one shot creates a narrative for the scene to show how easy it is for him.
  • No dialogues needed for the shot as it shows the narrative with action.

How can similar choices create different effects? Why would a director make these choices?
These question were then asked regarding Cause and effect of different cuts in scenes. Once discussion was over we watched two clips and compose an articulate paragraph that justifies your directional choices and include the director's text. One scene from Baby Driver which had these choices...

  • The music from the scene syncs with Baby's actions
  • The style goes along with the thematic piece.
  • The part of keeping the camera moving adds that he is looking around heavily.

The 2nd clip was the music video "Sweatpants" by Childish Gambino. Class was almost over by the time all of class could reach a discussion about the music video, but we will tommorow in class. Also don't forget to hand in Be Reel Blogs by midnight!!!
Also by the beginning of tommorows class each group will write a paragraph regarding their thoughts on the tweet and how if we were the director responding to it.
