Pirates of the Caribbean

The Driving Force From Within

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth movie in the POTC series.  It opens with Will Turner's son rowing out to sea (Henry Turner played by Brenton Thwaites).  He is determined to find his father and release him from the curse that binds him to the Flying Dutchman under the sea.  This passion charts his course throughout his young life.  Faced with death, Henry is instructed by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) to deliver a message to Jack Sparrow.  Similarly, Carina Smith has been labeled a witch because of her passion to understand the stars.  Her obsession with the stars comes from trying to understand the map that no man can read.  The book is her only connection to her unknown father.  Both Henry and Carina work together to find the trident of the sea which is the key to breaking all of the curses of the sea.  The map must be decoded to locate the trident.

It is interesting that Carina is labeled a witch because of her intelligence.  Throughout history, women have been looked as as inferior to men.  Ironically, the map that no MAN can read, can, in fact, be read by a woman.  Henry Turner was never taken seriously because of his young age and lack of experience.  First, his father told him to forget about him.  Later, when Henry warned the crew to avoid the Devil's Triad, they didn't believe him and locked him away.  This signifies how, even today, the youth are not valued for the potential they hold.

I have been watching Pirates of the Caribbean ever since I was a little kid and I always loved how it had a clever story line as well as had humor and action. I had been watching the original movie multiple times ever since it came out on Netflix and at long last they finally came out with the newest movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. I had not seen the movie yet so, for the first time, I sat down to watch it and absolutely loved it. The first thing that I noticed was that there was a familiar sounding voice from one of the characters.  After some research, I found out that it was actor Javier Bardem (AKA Anton Chigurh). Having known this actor as a mindless killer in No Country for Old Men,  it gave an extra chill to the characters tone. On top of that, I enjoyed seeing the always hilarious Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow on the screen again.

As the movie comes to a close, a secret is revealed that only becomes obvious to spot as you look back on the film.  The viewer will not fully understand what the secret is until the credits roll. This movie is a great example how one should never let the driving force from within them to be squashed by what others perceive of them.  A sense of fulfillment can come in a variety of ways. One can feel complete by physically attaining their lifelong wish, for example, a family reunited.  Alternatively, one can have that same sense of completion by discovering the answer to their burning questions, even in the face of painful loss.
