Be Reel Blog- The End of The F***ing World or The End to My Search for a Great Show

The End of The F***ing World is a Netflix original that is gaining popularity quickly and the hype is not for nothing. I went into the show thinking this is just another terrible show about high schoolers rebelling and I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up staying awake until about 2 in the morning and I watched the entire season that night. The changes that occur for the characters is monumental and somehow not done in a cheesy way. The story follows two teenagers who run away from their homes in search for something missing from themselves. Something that occurred to me immediately after watching the entire season was that it seemed a little formulated to bring people in and grab ahold of you. When I thought about it it seems as if the entire season is one big three act structure and someone who isn't weird like me and only watches one or two episodes might not notice it. When I went on IMDB to get the directors name I found out that the show was originally a short film and it was adapted to be this show. In the short film the writer (Jonathan Entwistle) also plays the main character

No matter how you feel about this formulated type of plot, there is no doubt that this show was directed and written fantastically. The main character James (Alex Lawther) starts off with us thinking he is a complete sociopath but over the course of the film he comes out of shell and really lives and feels emotions all thanks to his sort of kind of girlfriend, Alyssa (Jessica Barden). The acting in the film is superb and the problems both of the kids face are unique and interesting. I love how the writer really shows the theme of emotional trauma at a young age causes a numbness. James comes from a loving father who he hates because his father is always overcompensating for the fact that his mother killed himself in front of him as a little boy. James becomes a dark kid after that while his father is always bumbling and making dad joke trying to cheer him up. Alyssa on the other hand hates her mom and step dad because her step dad hates her and although her mom loves her she is controlled completely by her husband. When Alyssa and James run away together they at first are just having fun but when things turn dark they look for Alyssa's biological father.

By the end of the film you're in love with both these characters and their hunger for something that they just can't reach. Not to mention the whole show is some sort of twisted dark comedy. I certainly give this show a GOOD GOOD rating because it pulled me in with its awesome story and the way the writers changed the characters so perfectly made it a masterpiece.
