Hello classmates,
Today in class we had a mixture of notes and a few short clips we watched that are posted on our classroom page. There was a bit of a hectic start to class today because when we first came into class the fire alarm went off and we had to go outside for a fire drill. By the time we came back inside we got going right away on what we had to do to make sure it was done before class ended. We did a quick little review on cause and effect of analyzing film. The causes of these editing choices include thinks like cuts, transitions, and the assembly of scenes. Those specific things then have an effect on the narrative, thematic, and practical parts of the film. The narrative aspect of the film is the plot and character development. The thematic aspect is how theme is developed in specific scenes based on editing choices. Finally, the practical part is determining whether or not the editing choice made was practical based on cost, efficiency, and other real world things. After we reviewed that Mr.Rivers went on to explain to us our next task. He had posted two videos on the google classroom page earlier today with one being a music video and the other being the opening scene of a movie. We started off with the opening scene of the movie and that movie was "Baby Driver." He told us to focus on the editing choices of the scene how that impacts the narrative, thematic, and practical aspects of the film. We watched the scene which was of a guy walking through the streets of a metropolitan area with earbuds in. What we came up with for the editing choices and their effects were as follows: the camera was moving around him, it was one continuous shot, the lyrics line up with the graffiti and the world around him, and the music lowers when he takes his earbud out. The effect of these is that were focused on the character, stuck in his world, and the music is important. Next we watched the music video which was a rap song called "Sweatpants" by Childish Gambino. The music video consisted of Childish Gambino stuck in a loop of walking though a restaurant doing the same thing every time. We didn't talk about this one as a class but we split up into groups and we're given an assignment to choose to be the director of either the music video or movie and respond to a tweet criticizing our work. Me and Luke did not start writing our paragraph but we did re watch the music video and analyze all the hidden cuts. This is due tomorrow before class.
This can be used in the real world a lot because we watch films and music videos all the time. This can help us to break down what is going on and actually understand the work better. This can also help those of us who edit or create videos because now we can now see what an audience member wants to see.
