Daily Blog 1/23/18

Class started off reviewing what we learned yesterday. We went over Editing's purposes

Narrative - Story, Plot, Characters, Setting

Thematic - Tone, Pacing, Abstract -> Theme

Practical - Illusion of reality

We then watched an edit of The Wizard of Oz where all the lines where put in alphabetical order. We talked about the purpose of editing whether it be to tell a story or to create comedy. We then watched a scene from goodfellas that showed a continues shot and we continued to discus the purpose of the editors choices and how it shaped the narrative and gives you a sense of character. We discus the practical purpose of the edit, It immersed us in the world with that one continues shot. Then we watched a scene from Iron Man 3 and disused how it differed from the choices in goodfellas. The practical purpose of the edit in Iron man is to make the fight seem more realistic they used a lot of cuts. Thematically all of the cuts made the scene more fast paced and tense. From a narrative standpoint it made the person tony stark was fighting look superhuman. The last clip we watched was from a film called the protector. The protector used one continues shot from it's action scene. Because it used one continues shot it was able to convey a sense of scale that Iron man with all its cuts just wasn't able to.
