Big Mouth
Written and developed by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, a former SNL writer. And a show entirely about puberty and sex. So this is a recipe for absolute and total success.
The plot of Big Mouth is simple; the journey of the characters in the show (Jessica, Nick, Andrew, Jay, and more) through puberty and the terrors of growing up. This leads to some interesting scenarios, such as Nick getting his first girlfriend, the first middle school dance, masturbation, absolutely terrifying sleepovers, fights, and periods.
The animation here is nothing out of the ordinary in style, but it's done effectively. Nothing too outstanding, nothing too awful. It's just a 5/10. Neither amazing nor awful, so it's okay.
Here the real beauty is the development of the characters and the writing. They are stereotypically written as the pre-pubescent (or going through puberty) horny boys, and while that may be a problem with stereotyping, it is quite accurate. As a male who has gone through puberty, these were exact thoughts that boys had during this point in our lives. Maurice, the puberty monster in the show, adds an aspect of humor but can occasionally end up with very uncomfortable scenarios for everyone.
The episodes each have their own separate plots, so it's like a series of mini-movies but together. These plots range from borderline child abuse disguised as a sleepover, a day trip to New York City, Andrew developing a porn addiction, Andrew's first date, and many more. They are all well written and very riveting, and quite good at hooking you in until the end of the particular episode.
Voice-wise, the show excels. Not only do the voices fit the characters, but all voices in this show are very well recorded and don't have that strange twang that many recorded voices have these days.John Mulaney and Nick Kroll's voice fits their characters very well and no voices feel out of place.
Fundamentally, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this show. Big Mouth lets people know: It's okay to be scared and afraid. But you still have to face those issues all the same.
