Daily Log Blog - 1/19/18 Liam Cooke

Today in Mr. Rivers class he starts by talking about what the future of our senior paper will be. The review that was to be handed in yesterday will be evaluated by Mr. Rivers and we will continue the paper in a few weeks when we get our feedback in a couple weeks. The main lesson was more film related with the class talking about alfred hitchcock, and all the famous horror films he has created. We then watch an interview of him on his view of assemblie. Meaning to combine different pieces of film and cutting them to the correct positions and what a different organisation of the scenes affect the story. Also that everything that is edited is implied and develops the character with no need for narration, it also creates a linear sense of time (cause and effect) while having continuity of location. This can be manipulated to be good or bad for the character depending entirely upon the shots used in the film. With the last ten minutes in class we were assigned to find a picture that makes continuity and does not disturb the film being made. Then will share the images with the class that each group finds and judges if they have continuity or not.

All movies have these technicalities one being the eyeline match a common shot used in movies. It puts the first scene in focus then moves to a second shot, then back to the first with a reaction of the second. These can make or break a movie. There needs to be a relatable theme between them and needs to have continuity between them. However if the movie breaks too much in continuity it adds an absurdity effect to it which many filmmakers have done on purpose. And that’s what we did today.
