With more than 40 awards, it is hard not to have heard of the 2016´s largest cinema hit La La Land. Over the past couple of days, La La Land has been surrounding my life. With songs stuck in my head, soundtrack playing on the way to school, and arguments with my friends on whether or not it deserved the stamina it received. While I fought for La La Land, being a massive fan of the story and beautiful music ; my friend had a very different view. She argued that it was cliche, overrated, and had horribly chosen actors within the musical.
La La Land follows the story of two young adults, Mia and Sebastian, who both have large dreams. With Mia wanting to make it big in Hollywood, and Sebastian wanting to own and bring back jazz-clubs. In this movie, the two slowly fall madly in love, and begin to see the struggles of following their dreams while working on their relationship. Having to choose each other or their dreams, seems to become the largest difficulty within this musical. The music, costumes, lighting, and setting were all done simply yet beautifully. Bright colors and vintage inspired clothing choices, bring your full attention upon the screen. Not only is it hard not to pay attention but it is difficult not to sing along (or cry) to the jazzy melodies.
To argue against my friends statements ; First of all, La La Land is supposed to be cliche, as it takes many different film aspects from 1940's classic movies. So by doing this it creates a sense of nostalgia and appeal. Although many might find it to be cheesy, understanding it was made to follow the aspects of a 40´s movie it just makes the clicheness even better. As for the singing, Mia and Sebastian weren't supposed to be perfect singers, they are what resemble the everyday American. They were made to be relatable and imperfect, and if having them be amazing singers it would take away from the viewers being able to feel for the characters as they struggle to fulfill their dreams. Though I agree that La La Land was a little overrated, the objective and subjective qualities within this movie overpower this factor.
La La Land was the first movie I have ever watched to have a good, bad ending.
