Be Reel - Happy Gilmore

In the movie "Happy Gilmore," directed by Dennis Dugan, a hockey player turned golfer has to ascend to the top of the golf world in order to help his grandma pay for her house. Happy Gilmore's grandmother is about to get her house taken away and Happy (Adam Sandler) is refusing to let it happen. With his incredibly odd golf swing (he literally starts 10 yards behind the ball and runs up to hit it) Happy becomes a sensation. The people love Happy. Not only is his swing so weird but he does not abide by the golf sportsmanship rules. Happy can be seen screaming curse words, smashing his "clubs" (hockey sticks), and even getting into fist fights on the golf course. The professional golf association's board of director's has to get involved and tell Happy to relax on the course. Happy somewhat gets his act together and eventually gets into a showdown with the best golfer in the world, Shooter McGavin. This match is for all the marbles, Happy wins and his grandma keeps her house. Shooter wins and he takes the money with no house for grandma. Who will come out victorious? Can Happy save his grandma"s house?

Objectively, this film is very well made. The introduction to the movie sets up the events that unfold during the rest of the film. If we didn't learn that grandma needed the money then the conclusion to the conflict wouldn't be as interesting or important. It chronologically goes through all the events to set up the final scenes. Also, it uses some good elements of mise en scene such as diegetic audio. For example, when Happy starts fighting Bob Barker we hear the sound of punches being thrown and landed. Subjectively, this is an all time great movie. Adam Sandler does an absolutely terrific job in this film and it's one of his best movies ever. This movie is so funny and should be the basis for all comedy movies. If you understand golf and how it should be played then you will love this film because it bucks traditional golf. Ultimately this is one of the best comedies ever and will be watched forever by all sorts of people.
