Donnie Darko Wasn't That Crazy

Donnie Darko, directed by Richard Kelly is a science fiction movie about a schizophrenic teenager named Donnie, (Jake Gyllenhaal) who often has issues with what is real and what isn't. I've watched the movie on Netflix at least five times and it's one of my all time favorites.

The movie begins with Donnie waking up having sleep walked out of his house and on to a golf course sleep, while a jet engine simultaneously falls into his room in the middle of the night. Through out the film Donnie gets visions of a man in a bunny costume named Frank, who claims to be from the future. Frank gives Donnie instructions to follow and convinces him it's all part of a deeper plan. Donnie carries out the instructions some of which include vandalism, and arson. Donnie obsesses over the idea of time travel and by the end of the movie, he may not be as crazy as everybody thinks.

The general plot and multiple sub plots of the film are so intricate and actually kind of mind blowing. The movie seems to be divided into 3 different plots. The main plot which is Donnie's illness and him carrying out Frank's instructions. Another, which is what is happening on the outside with the people around him, this includes the lives of Donnie's family, school, friends, and girlfriend.  The third plot is the idea of time travel coming into play with all of the instructions Frank has given Donnie.

In my personal opinion, I think the movie displayed the idea of Donnie's said schizophrenia as an almost super power. That in reality Donnie wasn't crazy, that he tapped into something brilliant and could see things no one else could.

All things considered, it's definitely one of those movies that will leave you thinking, filled with questions and theories hours after watching it.
